As her 1993 blockbuster debut approached its 25th anniversary, Toni Braxton proceeded to collect accolades while moving forward. Her duets album with Babyface was designated Best R&B Album in 2015 by the Recording Academy – making her a Grammy winner in three decades – and the connection with her foundational audience was reaffirmed in 2017 with a Soul Train Legend Award. Her every-few-years release schedule was maintained with this short album, in which she responds to a habitually philandering lover with her distinctive mix of fire and finesse. This has more of the former element than any previous Braxton release. Although the title track is placed second in the sequence, it's really the first scene, or at least the album's basis, an emotionally raw if composed confrontation supported by piano and strings.

Pianists have been overlooking a treasure trove of solo Ravel: the composer's short score for Daphnis et Chloé. Previously only a handful of musicians have made their own suites for solo piano; here the Lithuanian pianist Indre Petrauskaite has produced something new: a 40-minute concert suite of unsuspected Ravel for solo piano. Indre Petrauskaite has used only Ravel's original material, but she consulted the orchestral score to fill out the textures, and her suite also respects the dramatic outline of the original ballet. The other, more familiar works here extend the ideas of antiquity and transcription. Indre Petrauskaite studied in Kaunas, Lithuania, winning a host of prizes. In 2000 she began studies at the Royal Academy of Music in London. She has given many solo and chamber-music recitals, not least in St Martin-in-the-Fields in London.

In the late '70s and early '80s, some people argued that Vernon Burch had made a big mistake by leaving the Bar-Kays. At the time, the Bar-Kays were huge. A combo that was originally known for Memphis soul had successfully reinvented itself as a hardcore funk band, and its albums of the period were doing a lot better than Burch's solo efforts. Naturally, some people couldn't help but wonder if Burch would have been better off sticking around for smashes like "Holy Ghost" and "Shake Your Rump to the Funk." But he didn't want to spend his entire career as the Bar-Kays' guitarist; he was determined to see what he could accomplish on his own. Recorded in 1979, Get Up was Burch's second album for Chocolate City/Casablanca and his fourth solo album overall.

2001 Dutch release with live recordings from the King Biscuit Flower Hour vaults. This 1983 Palladium show is a great place to start for anyone not turned on to Derringer's brand of music, though its circumstances were very unfortunate at the time. The gig was put together to raise money when all of the instruments and equipment belonging to Derringer and his band had been stolen, along with the van they were stored in that night, from a Greenwich Village side street. The guest artists include Lorna Luft (who put the show together), Dr. John, Edgar Winter, and Ian Hunter. The songs, played with reckless abandon, include a metal-crunching rendition of "Rock and Roll Hoochie Koo," awith an extended guitar finale; a gloriously tight and bracing "Let Me In," a medley of "All the Young Dudes"/"Roll Away the Stone" featuring Ian Hunter…

In 1996, while living in Rochford he was introduced to a program called FT2, a basic music production program where he began fusing sample snippets and experimenting in sound construction. David soon began producing under the moniker, “ALTYA” solidifying his interest in electronic music that guided his musical focus; accordingly he crafted many house and trance tracks that followed suit.

Dave Grohl has never lacked for big, high-concept ideas. On “Play,” the Foo Fighters frontman pays tribute to the romantic, often obsessive relationship musicians have with their instruments by uncorking a wordless, 23-minute rock epic on which he plays everything himself: drums, bass, guitar. All captured in single, uninterrupted takes—and filmed for a short documentary of the same name—it moves fluidly from heavy-headed grooves to jazzy interludes to the sort of searing crescendos that have made up the spine of many a Foo Fighters single. As has always been the case, Grohl is at his most electrifying when behind a drum kit, and “Play” overflows with both subtle moments and seismic, definitive fills. “It was really just to see if I could pull it off,” he told Jimmy Kimmel. “To see if I could do those full takes without making any mistakes and actually memorize that much music.”
